Canadian Garage & Auto Gear Reviews — Tested in Calgary, Alberta
Meet Jake Morrison
I spent 8 years as a licensed automotive mechanic at Canadian Tire in Calgary, AB, before launching TorqueGarageHub. Over those years I worked on everything from fleet trucks to weekend project cars — changing oil in January at -28°C, diagnosing electrical gremlins in portable light, bleeding brakes in a garage so cold the fluid thickened in the line.
I still work out of my own two-car detached garage in northeast Calgary. It has no heat source other than what I bring in. In January, temperatures inside regularly hit -32°C to -35°C before I fire up the heater. That is the environment where I test every product I review — not a climate-controlled workshop in California, not a heated showroom. A real uninsulated Prairie garage in real Canadian winter.
Why I Started TorqueGarageHub
Most gear review sites write for American buyers in mild climates. Their “best garage heater” lists include units that cannot cold-start below -10°C. Their “best tire inflator” picks are cordless units whose batteries die at -20°C. Their epoxy floor coating recommendations never mention that most products cannot be applied below 10°C — which rules out 8 months of the year in most Canadian provinces.
Canadian garages face different conditions than garages in Texas or California. Road salt corrosion, temperature swings of 60°C between January and July, frozen door seals, batteries that discharge overnight in the cold — these are real problems that Canadian mechanics deal with year-round. I write about them because I live them.
How We Test
Every product reviewed on TorqueGarageHub is tested or verified through one of the following methods:
- Personal use: I own it, I use it in my Calgary garage, I have an opinion formed through actual use over multiple seasons
- Extended testing: For major purchases, I test through a full Alberta winter — from the first November freeze to the April thaw
- Canadian availability check: Every recommendation is verified for availability through Amazon.ca, Home Depot Canada, Canadian Tire, or RONA — not just US retailers
- Price verification: All prices listed are Canadian dollars from Canadian sources at time of writing
- Cold-weather criteria: Any tool, heater, battery, or fluid is specifically evaluated for performance at temperatures below -20°C
